BCKOnline provides you with 5 options for locating information
-
The ‘enter terms’/query box
Simply enter a ‘search term’ in the space provided.
The words or phrases you enter may be complex scientific terms
or simple, everyday language that people use when discussing
breast cancer and its related issues. For instance, if you are
interested in specific chemotherapy treatments, then you may
enter such terms as Adriamycin or AC or chemotherapy. Our search
engine will find identical information regardless of which term
you enter.
-
Using the cartoons to tailor information
If you are after information which is more likely to be directly
relevant to your age group, disease stage, and specific needs
then you may search via the ‘cartoon profiles’ section.
Simply click on all or some of the cartoons which you feel best
describes you, or the type of information you require. NOTE:
If you do not select one or more of these options then it is
assumed that the information you require will include all the
available categories.
-
Browsing topics and subject areas
If you are not exactly sure what you are after and would like
to ‘browse’ the resources, then click on ‘Disease
Stages’ and this will provide you with a list of subject
areas contained within BCKOnline. You may then select one or
more boxes and information relevant to those specific areas
will be presented to you.
-
Selecting the depth of information you want
BCKOnline also allows you to determine the kind of information
you want. Experience tells us that not everyone wants to read
the latest 10 page scientific article full of statistics. Some
people may only require a brief outline of issues in layman’s
terms. You have the choice as to the depth and detail you want.
To select YOUR INFORMATION PREFERENCE, just click on the appropriate
button. For example: if you are after clinical trial studies,
then you would select ‘Scientific/Detailed’, but
if you require basic information on an issue then you might
choose – ‘Plain/Brief’ or ‘Plain/Detailed’.
-
Selecting the type of information you want
Sometimes people only want specific kinds of information. BCKOnline
allows you to select the KIND OF INFORMATION that you need right
now. The resources have therefore been sorted into 3 distinct
categories. You may choose 1, or two, or all of these categories.
It depends on your needs and interests. The categories are MEDICAL,
SUPPORTIVE, PERSONAL.
-
MEDICAL: you will find information related to breast
cancer treatment, management and research. Included in this
category are the latest clinical trial results, or information
on drugs.
-
SUPPORTIVE: includes resources on the emotional,
psychological impact of breast cancer as well as information
related to various government assistance schemes and the
contact details of support groups, bulletin board discussions,
online chat rooms, etc.
-
PERSONAL: includes the ‘voices’ of
other women and their families as well as those of health
professionals. This category is largely personal reactions
from people who have experienced breast cancer first hand.
AN ADDED FEATURE: THE QUALITY REPORT
It is important to have trust in the information you may find
on the internet. Currently, there is no accepted standard for
judging ‘quality’. BCKOnline will provide you with
a ‘quality report’ for each item. This will inform
you of the following: who created and published the information;
whether it is current; contains references, and if the subject
matter is of a controversial nature where medical opinion may
differ. You will also be given information as to the clinical
evidence upon which the item is based, for example, a clinical
trial, consensus opinion, or personal opinion. BCKOnline does
not RATE information – we simply provide you with a summary
of certain features of the information. It is up to you to decide
which specific feature is important and relevant to YOU.
